Code was from a time when the compiler was
not good at optimizing. Compilers are better
and instruction sets have increased to make
this code obsolete.

During the _pick only the Y plane is examined. In addition, data beyond
the borders of the frame is not read.

When the license headers were updated, they accidentally contained
trailing whitespace, so unfortunately we have to touch all the files
again.
